Dr. James Baughn (affectionately known as 007 to his students) is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at the university of California, Davis and has served more than five assignments as a Distinguished Visiting Professor in The Department of Aeronautics at the USAF Academy. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, Jim spent 8 years in the Aerospace industry before returning to complete his PhD at Stanford University. He holds an Airline Transport Pilot rating and is a gold-seal Certified Flight Instructor. Jim has flown more than seventy different types of airplanes including aerobatic, sea, and jet aircraft. He has taught Flight Test Engineering at both UCDavis and USAF Academy. He is a recipient of many teaching awards including the Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award at UCDavis. In 2008 he was selected as a recipient of the Daley/Orlofsky award by the Department of Aeronautics at the USAF Academy for “love of country, love of life, and love of God”. Jim brings both aerodynamic theory and real-world experience to the classroom, with many “and there I was” stories.
